Guide for UK trades

How to reply to a 4-star Google review: a UK trades guide

A 4-star review is a happy customer who held one star back, sometimes for a reason and sometimes just out of habit. Here's a simple three-part reply, what to avoid, and eight short examples you can adapt.

Why 4-star reviews deserve a reply

Lots of people never give five stars to anyone. A 4-star review is still strong praise, and a quick, warm reply underneath shows the next customer you notice and appreciate feedback.

A three-part reply to a 4-star review

Reply within a few days. Two or three sentences is plenty.

1. Thank them by name

A warm, genuine thank you. A 4-star customer is a happy customer, so treat it like a good review, not a complaint.

2. Mention something specific

Pick one detail they praised, such as turning up on time or a neat finish. It shows you read it and stops the reply sounding copy-pasted.

3. Handle the missing star lightly

If they said what held it back, acknowledge it in one sentence. If they didn't, don't ask why in public. Just sign off with your name.

What to avoid

  • Asking for the fifth star. Never ask them to change the rating, and never offer anything in return. That breaks Google's rules.
  • Getting defensive. A small niggle doesn't need a paragraph of explanation. One sentence of thanks for the feedback is enough.
  • Customer details. No addresses, prices, invoices or anything personal about them.
  • The same line every time. "Thanks for the 4 stars!" under every review looks automated. Mention the job.

Common questions

Should I reply to a 4-star Google review?

Yes. A 4-star review is a happy customer, and a short thank-you shows future customers you notice feedback. If they mention a small issue, a one-line acknowledgement helps.

How do I reply to a 4-star review that mentions a small problem?

Thank them, mention something specific they liked, acknowledge the small issue in one sentence without excuses, and sign off with your name. Three sentences is plenty.

Can I ask a customer to change a 4-star review to 5 stars?

No. Don't ask in the reply, and never offer a discount, refund or freebie in return for changing a review. That breaks Google's rules. Leave the rating to them.

Will replying to 4-star reviews improve my Google ranking?

No guarantees. Google decides how profiles rank and what it shows. Replying helps future customers see how you treat people. It does not promise higher rankings, more leads or more income.
