Guide for UK trades

How to reply to a 3-star or mixed Google review: a UK trades guide

A 3-star review usually means "mostly good, one thing wasn't". That's the easiest review to win back. Here's a simple four-part reply, what to avoid, and eight short examples you can adapt.

Why mixed reviews deserve a reply

People reading your profile often trust 3 and 4-star reviews more than a wall of 5-stars, because they feel honest. Your reply sits right underneath. A calm answer that thanks them and owns the issue tells the next customer you listen and fix things.

A four-part reply to a mixed review

Reply within a few days. Keep it to three or four sentences.

1. Thank them first

Start with a genuine thank you. They took the time to write, and most 3-star reviews still contain praise.

2. Name one thing they liked

Repeat back a specific positive, such as the tidy finish or the friendly team. It shows you read it properly, and future customers see the good bit twice.

3. Own the issue in one sentence

Say sorry for the part that fell short, without excuses or a long explanation. You don't need to accept liability for anything you dispute.

4. Say what happens next

Tell them what you've changed, or invite them to get in touch so you can sort it. Then sign off with your name.

What to avoid in a mixed-review reply

  • "But". "Thanks, but..." cancels the thank you. Use "and" or a new sentence.
  • Explaining it away. Long reasons for the delay or the price read as excuses. One sentence of sorry is enough.
  • Asking for a better rating. Don't ask them to bump it to five, and never offer anything in return for changing a review. That breaks Google's rules.
  • Customer details. No addresses, prices, invoices or anything personal about them.
  • Copy-paste replies. The same line under every review looks automated. Mention something specific.

Common questions

Should I reply to a 3-star Google review?

Yes. A 3-star review is often from a customer who was mostly happy but had one niggle. A short reply that thanks them for the good parts and owns the issue shows future customers you listen.

How do I reply to a mixed Google review?

Thank them, repeat back one thing they liked, acknowledge the issue in a sentence without arguing, say what you'll do or have done, and invite them to get in touch. Keep it to three or four sentences.

Can I ask the customer to change a 3-star review?

Don't ask in the reply, and never offer a refund, discount or freebie in return for changing or removing a review. That breaks Google's rules. Fix the issue properly and leave the rating to them.

Will replying to mixed reviews improve my Google ranking?

No guarantees. Google decides how profiles rank and what it shows. Replying helps future customers see how you handle feedback. It does not promise higher rankings, more leads or more income.
